All permanent residents of Canada who wish to become Canadian citizens, are required to pass a test usually referred to as Canadian Citizenship Test. It is one of the last requirements of the naturalization procedure: only applicants found eligible in terms of residency and background checks are invited to write the test.
The citizenship oath is usually scheduled a few months after the test, while the candidates are notified of the test results in writing a few weeks after the test. The citizenship test consists of multiple choice questions, based on the book "A Look at Canada", distributed to all applicants. The book covers general information about Canada's history, geography, people, and government system. One of the most important parts of the book is about rights and obligations of Canadian citizens – such as the right of vote. This topic is very important because giving a wrong answer to even one of the related questions results in failure, even if all the remaining questions have been answered correctly.
