A Last Minute addition to the Citizenship Test: WOMEN
Whoever was proof-reading the official manual, Becoming an Australian citizen, may have missed an “a” in Commonwealth, but one thing sure didn’t escape her attention: the absence of women. The August 2007 draft mentioned some women - four to be exact: The Queen; Margaret Court, Evonne Goologong and Cathy Freeman. In a newcomer’s mind, it could easily create the impression that women in Australia either reign or run. Let us rejoice: new citizens won’t be mislead by this macho game. Instead, they will have to get acquainted with two more female figures: Louisa Lawson and Dame Nellie Melba. (I myself would’ve picked Kylie Minogue and Nicole Kidman, but that’s me).
